SO this weekend saw … yep you guessed it – more sport. And yep more cycling. Bug bitten!
It was advertised by Victoria Cycling that there was a taster session with Belinda Goss in the velodrome in Melbourne. Kat being in love with the bike at the moment decided to give it a go. After all… why not! Belinda has won multiple track cycling world cups, multiple Australian championships and she has stood on the podium at multiple world championships. So a great opportunity to have a bit of inspiration for the first time on the track.
After standing at the bottom and looking up, I couldn’t quite believe how steep it was. I have been to see the track cycling a few times (most recently at the Commonwealths) but you are always looking down not up!
Still it was grab a bike, get on it, and off you go! Belinda gave us an introduction (most importantly how to stop…after all track bikes don’t have brakes!) and how best to take the bends. Lessons learnt – pedal fast, the faster you pedal and harder you push the smoother it felt! Still not confident in the whole stopping business – pretty much tried to jump off the bike each time (not you’re not in a triathlon Kat) and next time would love to give it a go with cleats.
2 hours flew by and it was awesome fun. It was amazing how fast my confidence grew, and how I started to go higher and higher up the sides. We had a go at a mini team pursuit and a scratch race – tactics are so important! Needless to say it won’t be the last time on the track. Loved it.
